WALES – LIVERPOOL
England

WALES – LIVERPOOL

  • 5 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, summer, fall

A short trip into two different worlds. Spend the first few days in the beautiful countryside of Wales before exploring the city of The Beatles, Liverpool. The vacation starts and finishes at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. I travelled here with my wife and my teenage daughter. My daughter loves The Beatles, my wife loves music, and I am drawn to nature and the sea. So, we were looking for a sort of compromise on this trip. And we found it!

4.6 / 5

Upon arrival at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, you'll pick up your rental car and head over to Wales, specifically the Isle of Anglesey. On the way, you can stop at the not-so-typical Chester Zoo or the Great Orme (207 m) for an interesting short hike, or you can take the tram down to the town of Llandudno.

You'll stay overnight in a lovely B&B and in the morning you'll make your way to South Stack Lighthouse. It's a really cool lighthouse, plus there are plenty of opportunities for a walk or a shorter hike. Most importantly, it is a great place for seabird watching. In the afternoon, you can wander through the beautiful Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens and see Penrhyn Castle.

The third day will be spent crossing back to Liverpool. During the drive you'll stop for a tour of the beautiful Swallow Falls Waterfall and an adrenaline rush at Zip World Fforest. In Liverpool, you'll stay at the stylish B&B The Green House, which is a place that embodies my expectations of Liverpool. In the evening you'll walk to the legendary The Cavern Club.

On your fourth day, you'll explore Liverpool, and everything related to The Beatles and music in general: The Beatles Story, the British Music Experience, the Beatles Statue, John Lennon's Childhood House, Strawberry Field, and Eleanor Rigby's grave. In the evening, you’ll have a great dinner and then hang out at one of the many music clubs.

On the fifth and final day you'll be left with the famous Penny Lane and Paul McCartney Childhood Home for the morning.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com.

Car rental – use AVIS. The rental desk is right in the arrivals hall. Remember, in the UK they drive on the left. If you're not confident enough about it, you'd better get full insurance – you'll be able to get it when you rent the car.

Tickets – if you're visiting in the summer season, you'd better get tickets in advance, at least for The Beatles Story, and for the British Music Experience.

Check opening times – be sure to check the opening times at Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens. Adjust your programme accordingly.

Calling and data – remember that the UK is not part of the EU, so check with your provider for call and data prices. Wi-fi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free.

When to go – pretty much any time except winter months. In the summer months there are a lot of people here, of course. So, it's best to come here in spring or autumn.

TIP – if you're a really passionate fan of The Beatles and really want to see everything then consider taking one of the "Beatles tours" in Liverpool in addition to the individual programme. There is a lot to choose from on the internet. Or you can try Mop Top Tours, which does half and full day tours and has excellent references.

Hiking in the Great Orme area

Great Orme Country Park Visitor Centre

A beautiful not-so-high mountain with a visitor centre, a cable car, and a tram! A place from which you can take several sightseeing trips. There is a small museum in the visitor centre. A place with wonderful views.

You can also leave your car downtown and take the tram and cable car to the visitor centre – it has its own charm.

South Stack Lighthouse

South Stack Lighthouse

A beautiful lighthouse in a lovely setting. You can take hiking trips in the area as well. Ideal place for bird watching. The lighthouse is accessible – you have to pay an entrance fee at the bridge to the island where the lighthouse is located. You can climb to the very top of the lighthouse.

Tour of The Beatles Story Museum

The Beatles Story

If you like The Beatles, then this museum is a must-see for you. There is everything from their beginnings up till their breakup.

There are a lot of people here, unfortunately.
