PUGLIA SHORT TRIP

PUGLIA SHORT TRIP

  • 4 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, summer, fall

Short holiday, suitable for a long weekend. Puglia is a bit of a forgotten region of Italy, but we loved it and will definitely come back again. You will see beautiful small towns, the mysterious Castel del Monte, interesting and beautiful trulli buildings, wonderful caves. Plus, you'll get a taste of the great local cuisine. The dishes are mostly simple, but all the more authentic and really good. Sitting down for a while with a coffee in hand is almost a must here, if only for the reason that coffee in Italy is not only fantastic but also very cheap. If you come in the summer, you can add to the programme a stay by the Mediterranean. There are many sandy beaches in the area.

It all starts with your arrival in Bari, try to buy your plane ticket so that you arrive before noon. The holiday is short. Once you land, you pick up your rental car at the airport. Just a small one is fine, as you won't travel any great distances and it's easier to park in the narrow city streets with a smaller car. You'll drive just a few kilometres and go on a tour of the beautiful Grotte di Castellana. There are two tours on offer, if you have the time go for the longer one, it's really very nice! It's worth a short drive for lunch somewhere else. There are a few restaurants near the cave entrances, but we didn't like any of them that much. After lunch, it's just a short drive to the town of Alberobello. A town full of beautiful circular trulli buildings that are typical of the region. If you have time left, take a look at the towns of Locorotondo and Martina Franca – both are worth a short visit. We arrived in Bari very early in the morning, so we managed to fit all these activities into the first day. You can stay overnight in a romantic hotel right in Alberobello or just outside the town in the very nice and quiet B&B Mirela.

On the second day, drive over to the town of Matera and take a walk in the Parco delle Chiese Rupestri di Matera on the way. The area around Matera is one of the most important places in the Mediterranean which are known to have once been inhabited by the Palaeolithic man. The oldest part of the city of Matera, "Sassi di Matera", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay in the historic centre of the town and take a walk through all the charming corners. Especially in the early evening the city has an amazing charm.

On the third day, drive to the mysterious Castel del Monte, which has been shrouded in mystery since the 13th century. Then the ancient towns of Gravina and Altamura await you, both full of beautiful winding streets.

On your last day, you'll drive to the visitor centre to learn all about the discovery of the so-called Altamura Man, which is 400,000 years old. And if you have time before your flight, you can go for a swim at the town beach in Bari, just a short drive from the airport.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com.

Restaurants – Puglia is not the richest part of Italy, which is reflected in the local prices. Prices in restaurants are not too high. But the quality of the restaurants is usually excellent!

Prices in the destination – as can be expected nice accommodation is not exactly cheap. On the other hand, it's not overpriced either and there is wide selection of possibilities.

Calls and data – for EU citizens, everything is the same as at home. WiFi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free.

When to come here – pretty much any time except winter months. In the summer months of July and August there are a lot of people here. So, it's best to go in spring or autumn.

What will you see on the way?

City of Alberobello

Alberobello

A small town, famous for its architecture. In the centre you will find the peculiar Trulli residential buildings. Circular white houses with stone roofs. It is interesting that the houses are built without the use of mortar. There are about 1,500 such houses in the town and you can look inside some of these.

You definitely want to see this!

Tour of Matera – Sassi di Matera

Matera – Sassi di Matera

Matera is an Italian town in the vicinity of which are the most important Palaeolithic sites in the Mediterranean area. Since 1993, the “Sassi di Matera”, the oldest part of the city, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This place is definitely worth a visit!

Trip to Castel del Monte

Castel del Monte

The castle has stood here since the 13th century and in 1996 it was added to the UNESCO heritage list. It is a mystery why the castle was built and what purpose it served. There were no kitchens or stables. Another mystery is the recurring number 8 – the castle’s ground plan is an octagon; the castle has eight corner towers whose height is three times the number eight. And there are eight halls inside the castle. It’s strange and it’s nice.

You must leave your car in the car park and either walk the rest of the way or use the local shuttle bus. It’s a bit of an uphill walk, but it's good to stretch out your legs on the way.
