OMAN – NORTH ROAD TRIP
Oman

OMAN – NORTH ROAD TRIP

  • 9 days
  • couples, w/ older kids
  • spring, fall, winter

Nine days in the north of exotic Oman. You'll travel over the high(ish) mountain ranges to see the beautiful desert, you'll drive to the Indian Ocean and discover numerous wadis. This is an ideal trip for first-time visitors to Oman and those with adventurous nature. You'll sample some great local cuisine, although it's more likely to be Indian or Yemeni rather than trully Omani. You'll get a glimpse under the guise of another culture. You will experience the incredible hospitality of the locals. The Omani nature has much to offer and you will be surprised by its diversity!

5 / 5

After arriving in Muscat and picking up your car, you will take a long drive to the Al-Hajar Mountains. Along the way you will make a trip to Wadi Qurai, visit an old abandoned village with houses made of stones and discover the falaj irrigation system. The first night will be spent on the edge of the Balcony walk in Jebel Shams. The next morning, you will go on a hike over the Ghul Canyon and drive to the old town of Al Hamra. In the afternoon you will visit the mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyeen.

Then on the third day you can choose your programme. If you've rented a proper off-road vehicle and you like off-road driving, then you'll definitely take the Wadi Bani Awf route. If not, you have a choice of two other programme options. You'll finish the evening in Jabal Akhdar at the surreal and romantic accommodation at The Suwgra. On the fourth day, after exploring Wadi Bani Habib, you will head to the desert town of Bidiyah, from where you will transfer to your campsite in the desert. A spectacular sunset between the dunes and a great Bedouin dinner by the fire await you. The next day you will stay in the desert. You can take a guided tour including a jeep ride in the dunes, you will relax and enjoy the, for us, unusual and beautiful desert environment.

On the sixth day, there is a slightly longer crossing that takes you first to the Indian Ocean coast and then to the coastal town of Sur. Along the way you will stop at beautiful beaches for a swim. You will visit seaside villages and a beach where sea turtles hatch. And in the early evening, you'll browse the markets of Sur. The next day, your seventh, you'll drive to Wadi Al Shab and spend the morning hiking and swimming. In the afternoon, you will have several programme options to choose from. For example, you can go to the amazing and not much visited Wadi Tiwi, or go for a swim at Bimmah Sinkhole.

On the eighth day, you'll go to the capital city of Muscat. You'll see the Mutrah district, where there is a classic city market, a very nice coastal promenade. The programme of the last depends on your departure time, but we recommend a tour of the amazing Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the morning.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com. The low-cost airline SalamAir has somewhat frequent flights to Oman. We used their services for a flight to and from Prague and it was a hassle-free experience.

Car rental – there are a number of car rental companies at the airport. But first it's important to think about what type of car to rent. For this specific vacation we recommend a 4x4 offroad car, that way you can drive safely and get anywhere. Specifically, you may go for TOYOTA FORTUNER, TOYOTA LAND CRUISER. Alternatively choose another kind of a 4x4 like Kia Sorento or RAV 4 – these will get you to most places, but you should avoid the more extreme and difficult roads. A car without a 4x4 is NOT suitable for the route we have suggested, as you will not get to the Balcony walk or Jabal Al Akhdar. We had a good experience with the international company Europcar. Beware of mileage restrictions when renting; you will drive about 1500 km. CAUTION: a credit card is required to rent a car, a debit card will not suffice. And if you want to plan your own route, rent a 4x4 offroad with a roof tent. Try renting from Active Oman.

Driving – the roads in Oman are in perfect condition, they are also well signposted (all signs are always in English too). There are speed cameras on the highway, the fines are quite high. You can also get a fine for having a dirty car, so don't hesitate to visit car washes – they are very cheap. If the road is marked for 4x4s only, take it seriously! Keep in mind the restrictions that car rental companies have in their terms and conditions; it is best to discuss the route you want to take with them beforehand (this applies particularly to off-road routes or desert journeys).

Visa requirements – check your visa requirements.

Safety – Oman is one of the safest countries in the world. You don't need to worry. Follow the dress code of Muslim countries. Women don't have to cover up completely, but you shouldn't be dressed too provocatively.

Hikes – there are not that many marked hikes, but there are more and more being created. If they are marked, then the signposting and navigation are very good. Be careful on your hikes, sometimes the roads are not as secure as a European would expect.

Prices at the destination – prices in ordinary restaurants and cafés are very reasonable. Accommodation tends to be a little more expensive. Fuel costs no more than 50% of what it costs in Europe. Calling and data – international roaming is very expensive. Buy a data card at the airport and you can have cheap internet access. Signal coverage is more than good. Use the services of Ooredoo.

When to go – travel in northern and central Oman is possible from October to April. Temperatures soar above 50°C in the summer.

Money – you can exchange money directly at the airport, but keep in mind that the fee is quite high. There are also ATMs at the airport so you can withdraw cash. You can pay by card in most restaurants and shops. However, some small hotels or restaurants outside the more populated areas require cash payment.

Process

  • Check your visa requirements

  • Buy plane tickets

  • Book your accommodation

  • Arrange car rental

  • Make a schedule for each day, following our tips

  • Get travel insurance

  • Download offline maps, for example in the Mapy.cz app

  • Check mobile phone deals in Oman beforehand. At the airport, you can easily arrange everything at the Ooredoo stand.

What will you see on the way?

Balcony walk

Balcony walk

Sightseeing route over Wadi Ghul. A truly unique route with beautiful views. The route there and back is 8.4 km in total. Bring enough water for the journey. Good hiking boots are an advantage. The route is well marked. The trail takes you to the end of the canyon to a small lake. Not many people get to the end, but it would be a shame to give up too soon. The route isn’t circular, but that doesn’t matter because the views are really beautiful! In warm weather, set off really early in the morning. Allow 3-5 hours for the hike, depending on how fast you walk.

Driving through Wadi Bani Awf (offroad trip)

Wadi Bani Awf

This place is mainly about the journey through the wadi from the direction of Al Hamra to Rustaq. You definitely need a 4x4 vehicle for this trip; we recommend an offroad vehicle with a higher chassis. We made the journey in a Kia Sportage, and it was neither comfortable nor completely safe. I would opt for at least a Toyota Fortuner next time. You need to have good driving skills as well. If you don’t have any off-road driving experience, be very careful and consider whether you want to drive here at all. Similarly, ask your rental car company beforehand if you can make the trip in car you have rented. Other than the sometimes-stressful nature of the journey, the drive is breathtaking, the views are absolutely stunning, and the mountain villages are very pretty. The Oman Off-Road publication is great, but there is no point in buying it for this one trip.

JEEP TOUR in the desert

JEEP TOUR

Jeep tour in the desert. You have to make arrangements in advance about how long the tour will be and you pay by the hour. We went for 3 hours and that’s about the maximum time I’d recommend. The guide picked us up at the campsite in the morning, we joined him in the jeep and drove through a large part of the desert. He took us to his farm where they had baby lambs and two days old baby camels. We stopped for coffee in a typical Bedouin tent, where you buy a little something in return. We drove up and down huge dunes in places you wouldn’t believe possible. We ended the trip with lunch at the guide’s home, specifically in a tent in his garden. Then he drove us back to the campsite. It was great and we enjoyed it a lot!
