Day trip to the island of Capri

Crossing to Capri. Sightseeing tour of the island and return to Naples in the evening by boat.

Today is a bit of a relaxing day – a trip to the island of Capri. There are two places in Naples where passengers board boats to Capri: Molo Beverello, where the fast ferries depart, and Calata Porta di Massa, where the slow ferries depart. The timetables are constantly updated and refer to the current week. They can be very variable, especially with regard to the weather. You can find everything you need to know about transport to Capri here. You can also get a full list of companies and timetables here, where you can also buy tickets online.

It's easiest and cheapest to buy tickets in person at the port – just arrive at the pier 30 minutes early and buy your tickets. On weekends or during the summer tourist season it is better to buy tickets several days in advance. So, either stop here when you arrive or buy your tickets online, for which there is a fee, of course. If you buy tickets online, you must then exchange the voucher at the ticket office on the pier before boarding the ship. You can buy tickets online here. If you’re worried about seasickness, buy tickets for slow ferries or single-hull ferries – the catamaran always rocks the most. If you’re physically disabled, make sure the boat is adapted for you before buying tickets – by law it has to be, but the reality is sometimes different. The price for one ticket and one trip is between 15 EUR and 25 EUR per person. A fast ferry takes less than an hour to Capri, a slow one takes 30 minutes longer.

Ideally, choose a fast boat leaving at about 9:30am – this is likely to leave from the port of Beverello, which is easily reached in 25 minutes on foot (route). If you leave the ticket purchase for today, leave the hotel at 8:30am and you’ll be able to manage everything just fine. Orientation on the Beverello pier is easy. Buy your return ticket for as late as possible, ideally after 5pm. Enjoy the cruise – the Tyrrhenian Sea is beautiful!

Avoid visiting any of the marina bars when you arrive in Capri’s Marina de Grande. There are several and you have to walk past them after you get off the boat and it’s tempting to reward yourself after the boat journey, but bear in mind that these bars are not cheap at all! So, walk past them and continue on to the cable car stop (here). You can’t miss it, it's right in the harbour. But in case of need everyone will give be happy to help you. The cable car timetable and price list are here. The cable car runs every 15 minutes and takes you to Capri town.

The top station of the cable car is right in the centre of town at the medieval Piazza Umberto I. Walk through all the streets and check out the Chiesa di Santo Stefano. Capri is a beautiful little town and it’s best to just walk around aimlessly and look for the beautiful alleyways and hidden corners. You’re sure to find a good restaurant for lunch. The Villa Margherita restaurant was great, you can walk there this way from the piazza. Great place and fabulous food!

When you’ve enjoyed the town of Capri, move on to Anacapri – it’s not far. Take a taxi and you’re there in just a few minutes. Get dropped off at the Monte Solaro cable car station. You can also take a bus; it stops a short distance from the cable car. The cable car will get you to Monte Solaro in about 12 minutes. You shouldn’t miss this trip, because from the top you can see as far as Naples or Vesuvius in clear weather. You can take the cable car back again, or take a walk and descend on foot (route). Expect the trip to Monte Solaro to take at least 1.5 hours. The return cable car ride costs 11 EUR. If you have time left, take a walk through the town of Anacapri. The church of Chiesa San Michele is worth seeing, it has a beautiful mosaic floor. Entrance fees are 2 EUR.

When it’s time for the boat to leave, go to the port. Take a taxi. It’s a 15 minute drive, about 5 km (here).

If you are here in the summer and want to explore the island from a boat and have a chance to swim, then try contacting Capri Precious. Choose one of the tours on offer – they are all great!

Get back to your hotel for a little rest and then head out for a late dinner – you’re in Italy, here they don’t have dinner until 10pm.

Alternatives: you can rent a small boat in Capri and spend some time at sea. Try the great Capri Precious company. And if you are tired after the trip to Rome and you don't want to travel much more, you can spend the morning relaxing and then in the afternoon go to the Herculaneum Ruins

Marina de Grande Capri

Marina Grande is a port on the island of Capri. When you arrive, find the information centre in the harbour, and take a map of the island. The bottom station of the cable car is in the harbour, just take a short walk through the tunnel. There are also motorbikes or scooters for rent a short distance from the harbour.

WARNING: Avoid bars in this area, or check the prices beforehand. It can be very overpriced here!
