NAPLES – POMPEII – ROME – CAPRI

  • 6 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, summer, fall

A beautiful sightseeing trip that is packed with activities. Six days in the iconic Italian city of Naples. A city that may be a little intimidating at first, but then you'll fall in love with it. You'll discover its historic centre, both its world-famous and lesser-known sights. You'll taste a lot of Italian food and wine. You'll explore Pompeii, see Vesuvius. Take a day trip to Rome by high-speed train. Take a boat to the amazing island of Capri. It's a really packed six days. And if you've never been to Rome, you can extend your holiday by staying there a little longer. Plus, flights to Naples are often very reasonably priced, so it can be a less expensive holiday. The ideal time to travel here is spring or autumn – in the summer it will be very crowded and also quite hot, but you can swim in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, on the other hand.

5 / 5

Every time I think of Italy, I think of sunshine, sea, historical sights, and nice people. And on this trip, you'll experience all of that. Upon arrival, you'll transfer to your hotel and will be introduced to the slightly wild city of Naples. I think Naples' reputation is a little worse than the reality. We have been here several times and never had any unpleasant feelings. Yes, there are pickpockets, but where there are not. So ordinary vigilance will do. Finish your first day with a great dinner.

The very next morning, you'll head to Pompeii. The journey is easy, the train runs very frequently, and the stop in Pompeii is right next to the archaeological park. Pompeii is beautiful and also really large, so don’t expect to be able to walk through all of it in just half a day – but at least you'll have a reason to come back. I've been there four times now and would love to go again. In the afternoon you will go to Vesuvius. Don't worry, you can get very close to the top by bus or taxi. However, it's still a bit of a walk. But it's worth it. The views are great, both of the surroundings and of the crater, from where clouds of steam still occasionally escape. End the evening with another great Italian meal!

On the third day, you will have another day trip – this time to Rome. From Naples you can get there by a high-speed train, it's not expensive and the journey takes just over an hour. Getting to know Rome in less than a day is a challenge and takes a bit of planning, but you can choose just 3-4 sights to visit and not rush to see everything, you can't do it all anyway. In the evening you will take the train back to Naples.

On the fourth day you will be on the move again. This time you will take a boat to the island of Capri. The island is beautiful, and you will spend almost the whole day there. And your fifth day will be dedicated to Naples itself. You will walk through the entire historic centre, visiting many monuments and churches.

On your last day, save the morning for a visit to the Doll's Hospital or for one of the other activities the city has to offer.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com.

Accommodation – you can book your accommodation directly at the Piazza Bellini or use booking.com.

Transportation to and from the airport – ideally choose to travel by a taxi – after collecting your luggage call the Piazza Bellini Hotel and they will arrange a taxi for you at a discounted rate (phone 0039 81-451732). If you want to take public transport, please see the description at the beginning of our guide.

Safety – Naples has a reputation for being a bit wild, but as a tourist moving around in essentially touristy places you need not worry. Of course, you have to be wary of pickpockets. There’s nothing to worry about on the tourist trails and in the historic centre.

Calls and data – for EU citizens, everything is the same as at home. WiFi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free.

When to come here – to enjoy everything and make all the trips, spring or autumn is the ideal time. In the summer months there will be a lot of tourists and it will probably be very very hot!

What will you see on the way?

Archaeological Park of Pompeii

Archaeological Park of Pompeii

Everyone knows the fate of Pompeii and it is definitely a good idea to visit here. The grounds are really extensive, and you can easily spend 4 hours or more here. Public dining rooms, palatial houses, baths, theatres, mosaics… it is all incredibly well preserved. If you come here in the summer, take enough water with you. There is a refreshment place in the area, but it can be quite far to get to from some parts of the large grounds.

It's a really big area, I've been here 4 times and each time I discovered something new.

Colosseum

Colosseum

The Colosseum is incredibly well preserved. The unguided tour is great, but just be sure to buy your tickets in advance and online – follow our instructions in the tour description, or check the Colosseum website. Definitely expect big queues and try to arrive as early in the morning as possible.

Beware of the various street vendors and "artists", they entice you to take a photo together, but believe me, it will be the most expensive photo you ever take.

Day trip to Capri

Capri

The island of Capri belongs to Italy. It is located in the Bay of Naples. Apart from the town of Capri, there is another municipality, Anacapri, and the port Marina Grande. To get here takes less than an hour by boat from Naples. The island is really beautiful and definitely worth a visit. Be sure to keep one full day free for your visit to Capri.
