A relaxing holiday on the island of Lanzarote, a place of beauty. Incredible landscapes created by volcanic eruptions, the omnipresent legacy of local native César Manrique and warm weather all year round – that's a basic description of the island. You'll discover the beautiful Timanfaya National Park, the beautiful sandy beaches, the wild coastline, the unforgettable Jardin de Cactus, or the Caldera Blanca hike. And there's so much more. Every day a new part of the island opens up before you. The advantage is that the island is not very big, so you can stay in one place for the whole of your stay. Lanzarote is also known for its special way of grape growing – you will have plenty of opportunities to taste the excellent local wine. We were here in February, it wasn't for swimming, but otherwise it was an optimal time. Only a few tourists everywhere and relatively warm weather. In the summer it's probably worse in terms of the amounts of people.
In the morning, visit Casa Museo César Manrique, then a short trek to Volcán de la Corona. Transfer to Mirador del Rio with a view of the island of La Graciosa. Visit to the unique Famara beach.
César Manrique was a very famous native – he was a sculptor, architect and artist. He designed many things on the island. You can visit the museum in the house where he lived, Casa Museo César Manrique. The direct journey takes an hour, but there are some beautiful viewpoints along the way (especially towards the end of the route) where you will want to make a stop. One such viewpoint, for example, is here.
After visiting the museum, you'll drive just a short distance to the village of Ye (route). Leave the car at the church and go on a shorter hike to Volcán de la Corona. It is a little under 4 km of beautiful walking (route). It’s about 1.5 hours of easy walking. On the way back, stop at Restaurante Volcan de La Corona for a delicious lunch.
Afterwards, continue by crossing to Mirador del Rio (route) as it's only 5 minutes away. This will take you to the northernmost part of the island. From the viewpoint you can see another of the Canary Islands: La Graciosa. There is also a café on the lookout, also designed by César Manrique.
The local roads are not very wide, and you can't drive fast, so even this next, relatively short drive, will take you almost 50 minutes (route). However, Famara beach is well worth it! You can just sit down, swim or watch the kiters. If you stay longer on the beach, have dinner in the village of La Santa – route to the local restaurant ALMA Tapas & +.
It's another 40 minutes’ drive to your accommodation (route).
Alternatives: while driving to the north of the island you might as well plan a trip to the island La Graciosa with Safari la Graciosa Daniel. Or arrange a surfing lesson on the Famara Beach with Lanzasurf. And I again recommend the services of Bike spot Lanzarote and Papagayo Catamaran.
Before you come to Lanzarote, learn something about who César Manrique was. Here you can visit the house that in 1986 Manrique adapted to suit himself and where he lived until his death in 1992. You will see the rooms where he lived as well as the studio where he worked.
A short hike – 3.7 km in total with a slight climb at the beginning. Interesting nature, nice surroundings. On the way back you can stop for lunch in Ye village – Restaurante Volcan de La Corona is a great restaurant where you can get lunch.
A good local restaurant. They specialize in grilled meats, but they have a wider offer. Nice environment.
The Mirador del Río, located at 400 metres on the Risco de Famara, is one of César Manrique’s most representative architectural creations, as it shows many artistic and architectural details and his eagerness to combine art and nature. Of course, the views are great from here, but if you’re not interested in architecture or don’t want to have a coffee in the café, feel free to take a ride to the Mirador de Nahum, a public viewpoint.
A great natural beach. You can rent kite/surf/SUP equipment. There are big waves here. Watch out for the lower currents. Although we were here in January and didn’t swim, we enjoyed running from the waves for a total of 2 hours.
Beautiful place!
We found this restaurant on recommendation, and it was a good choice. Great, simple food and friendly service. The fish on the daily menu was great, perhaps the best we have tasted in Lanzarote.
