LANZAROTE
Spain – Canary Islands

LANZAROTE

  • 7 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, summer, fall, winter

A relaxing holiday on the island of Lanzarote, a place of beauty. Incredible landscapes created by volcanic eruptions, the omnipresent legacy of local native César Manrique and warm weather all year round – that's a basic description of the island. You'll discover the beautiful Timanfaya National Park, the beautiful sandy beaches, the wild coastline, the unforgettable Jardin de Cactus, or the Caldera Blanca hike. And there's so much more. Every day a new part of the island opens up before you. The advantage is that the island is not very big, so you can stay in one place for the whole of your stay. Lanzarote is also known for its special way of grape growing – you will have plenty of opportunities to taste the excellent local wine. We were here in February, it wasn't for swimming, but otherwise it was an optimal time. Only a few tourists everywhere and relatively warm weather. In the summer it's probably worse in terms of the amounts of people.

4.8 / 5

Lanzarote Airport is a short drive from the island's capital, Arrecife. Pick up your car right at the airport and drive to the very southern tip of the island. It's best to have accommodation in one of the beautiful villas as suggested in our guide, with each having its own heated outdoor pool and a beautiful garden. In the afternoon or evening you can drive to the town of Playa Blanca, or head to the sea and take a little stroll around Playa Mujeres.

The next morning you will head to Timanfaya National Park. The tour of the park is only possible from the deck of a local bus, but it's still definitely worth visiting! You will stop for lunch in the town of El Golfo – the very photogenic El Lago Verde is just a short walk away from here. In the afternoon you will visit Los Hervideros, the place where lava meets the ocean, and later you will climb the not very high Montaña Roja.

You will start your third day with a tour of the Jardin de Cactus, then you will move on to Jameos del Agua where you can admire the endemic small white crabs. You should also stop at Cueva de los Verdes, where you will go through a tunnel created by lava on its way to the ocean. In the early evening, you'll take a look at the capital city of Arrecife. The fourth day is rather relaxing, you will visit Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park and then you will spend the rest of the day enjoying the heated swimming pool at your villa or a stay on the beach. In the evening you will prepare a great BBQ.

On the fifth day you will explore the northern part of the island. On your way north, stop at Casa Museo César Manrique and take a short trek to Volcán de la Corona. From the Mirador del Rio viewpoint, you'll see the nearby island of La Graciosa. On the sixth day, you will go on a very nice trek to Caldera de Montaña Blanca of about 10 km. The rest of the day you can relax, swim, or visit some of the local wineries.

The programme of the last day depends on your departure time. If you have time left in the morning, you can go to Castillo de Santa Bárbara, where there is a pirate museum. I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised by Lanzarote and would love to come back again!

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com.

Rent a car – even though you will be driving quite often, the distances on the island are not very big so you won't need a particularly large car. You can use the services of AVIS.

Prices at the destination – well, the nice accommodation isn’t exactly cheap. Otherwise, prices are similar to mainland Spain.

Calls and data – for EU citizens, everything is the same as at home. WiFi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free.

When to come here – you can travel to the Canary Islands at almost any time. Just don't count on being able to go for a swim in the winter months, even in the heated pools.

Specifics of the weather – the Canary Islands are characterized by very frequent and strong winds.

TIP – there are plenty of activities to do in Lanzarote. If you haven't found what you were looking for in this description, check out https://turismolanzarote.com/en/ or https://www.amazinglanzarote.com/.

What will you see on the way?

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park

The volcanic eruptions that occurred between 1730 and 1736 and in 1824 led to numerous geomorphological structures that are now of great volcanological interest. It is a great park. The only shame is that the tour takes place strictly on board of a bus. The park tends to be very crowded, so ideally come here early in the morning, otherwise you’ll be stuck in a big queue. You pay the entrance fee and take the car to the visitor centre; there you transfer to the bus. The tour is all guided, but you will not leave the bus at any point. However, the scenery is dramatic enough that even this way it’s definitely worth a visit.

There is a restaurant where you can have grilled chicken, which they prepare on an open grill behind the restaurant – a grill over a crack with heat coming out of the ground. It's not cheap, and the taste isn't great either.

Jardin de Cactus

Jardin de Cactus

Like perhaps most of the buildings and monuments, the Jardin de Cactus was designed by local native César Manrique. The garden is gorgeous and there are a lot of cacti. The garden also has a café, where among other things they serve a cactus burger – not bad at all.

Mirador del Río

Mirador del Río

The Mirador del Río, located at 400 metres on the Risco de Famara, is one of César Manrique’s most representative architectural creations, as it shows many artistic and architectural details and his eagerness to combine art and nature. Of course, the views are great from here, but if you’re not interested in architecture or don’t want to have a coffee in the café, feel free to take a ride to the Mirador de Nahum, a public viewpoint.
