GREAT ROUND TRIP IN PUGLIA

GREAT ROUND TRIP IN PUGLIA

  • 7 days
  • couples
  • spring, summer, fall

Puglia is a beautiful part of Italy. In these seven days, you will drive through quite a large part of this region. You'll visit historic sites, picturesque towns and villages, take in the local countryside and sample plenty of local specialities. You will get to know a bit of the Ionian and Adriatic coast. Especially in spring and autumn, you will find peace and quiet here and you won't meet crowds of other tourists. In summer, it can get a little busier, but even so, Puglia is not one of the most popular places among tourists. Unjustifiably so, because it really is a great place for an explorative, active holiday!

Continuing the journey south

Morning tour of the Castellana Grotte cave. Afternoon tour of the fabulous Alberobello.

After breakfast, move on to the first stop of the day, which is the Castellana Grotte cave (route). It's about 1 hour away. The Castellana Grotte cave is very nice, and you can choose from two tours – the longer one is 3 km and takes up to 2 hours, the shorter one is 1 km long and takes up to 1 hour. They open at 9am. Unless you come here in high season, there is no need to buy tickets online.

You can have lunch at one of the restaurants before entering the cave, but honestly none of them really appealed to us, so we drove into town, where there was a better selection of restaurants. The route is here.

After lunch you'll have just a short 20-minute drive to the town of Alberobello (you can park your car here). A town that is famous for its architecture. In the centre you will find the peculiar Trulli houses, circular white houses with stone roofs. Interestingly, the houses were built without the use of mortar. There are about 1,500 of them in the city. You can look into some of these houses. In Alberobello you can just wander the streets and discover all the charming places on your own. Or go to the info centre for a map or more information. From the recommended parking it's only a 3-minute walk to the info centre (route).

Accommodation – The town is so charming that you should want to stay here, so, ideally book accommodation at the B&B Romantic Trulli. The private parking provided by this hotel is a big advantage (about 5 minutes from the accommodation). If you don't want to stay in the town’s centre, there is lovely accommodation at B&B Mirella, which is just a short drive from Alberobello (route). There is parking, a garden and also a swimming pool. The rooms are very nice with comfortable beds. For dinner you can then go to Casa Rotolo – Pizzeria, the route is here.

Alternatives: instead of exploring the Castellana Grotte cave, take a tour of the large Castello Normanno-Svevo di Gioia del Colle.

Grotte di Castellana

The Castellana Grote is very nice, and you can choose from two tours – the longer one is 3 km long and takes up to 2 hours, the shorter one is 1 km long and takes up to 1 hour. They are open from 9 a.m. Unless you come here during the season, there is no need to buy tickets online in advance.

We took the longer tour, and it was great. Better go into town for lunch, the local restaurants didn't impress us. On the other hand, the selection of establishments in town was excellent.

Alberobello

A small town, famous for its architecture. In the centre you will find the peculiar Trulli residential buildings. Circular white houses with stone roofs. It is interesting that the houses are built without the use of mortar. There are about 1,500 such houses in the town and you can look inside some of these.

You definitely want to see this!

2-4 hours

Romantic Trulli B&B

Perfect accommodation! It really has a charming atmosphere. Especially when you order a Trulli with a terrace and in the morning, you have your breakfast brought there! If you are a romantic soul you must stay here at least one night.

The parking lot is called Parking in via Bainsizza n.22

Trulli

Trulli are remarkable examples of construction without mortar, a prehistoric building technique still used in the area. Trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders. Characteristically, they have pyramidal, domed, or conical roofs built of limestone slabs. There are many Trulli in the city and some of them are accessible.

Start your tour at the information centre, where you will be given a map with descriptions.
