GREAT ROUND TRIP
Jordan

GREAT ROUND TRIP

  • 7 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, fall, winter

Jordan is a beautiful country. This road trip will take you to the most famous places. Rent a comfortable car, you will have a bit longer journey – you will drive almost 1,000 km. But the journey is the destination – this is doubly true in Jordan, as you'll still have plenty to look at along the way. You'll see one of the modern wonders of the world, the rock city of Petra. You'll spend two days in one of the most beautiful places in the world – Wadi Rum. It's a breath-taking desert, full of colours. You can bathe in both the Red and Dead Seas. You will see Mount Nebo, from where Moses showed his followers Israel. You will explore the incredibly well-preserved monuments of Jerash, the city founded by Alexander the Great. You'll see the Jordan River, where Jesus himself was baptized. You'll also see the famous mosaic map of the world in Madaba. On top of all this, you'll taste great food, drink lots of tea and meet incredibly nice people. Jordan is much visited and the perfect time for this trip is the very beginning of March. It's already nice and warm and there may not be as many tourists yet. We were here once in mid-February, and it was fine too. Just be careful in winter it can rain and sometimes there is even snow.

5 / 5

Upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport near Amman, pick up your rental car at the rental agency. Rent a comfortable one, you have a long journey ahead of you. And the very first crossing is really long, but also very nice. The road will take you to Wadi Musa, the town from where a pedestrian road leads to the legendary rock city of Petra. If you have time and are a good driver, choose the King's Highway to get from the airport to Wadi Musa – it's a great road full of really nice views. In the late afternoon or evening, drive to see Little Petra.

Early the next morning you'll walk through the Siq Gorge to Petra. You'll need 5 hours for the basic tour, but the more time here the better. Bring good shoes, they will definitely come in handy. In the afternoon, you will make the crossing to Wadi Rum for your first night in a Bedouin tent in the middle of the desert. On the third day you will go on a full day jeep tour of Wadi Rum. It's a great experience and you won't know what to admire first. In the evening you can watch the stars, the conditions here are absolutely perfect.

The next day is a bit more relaxing, you will drive to Aqaba, which is on the shores of the Red Sea. You can take a swim or book a dive for the afternoon; the corals are famous here. On the fifth day, the crossing is again a little longer. You will see the Dead Sea, Mount Nebo, and the town of Madaba. On the way, you can stop at the great Mujib Nature Reserve or take a dip in the Dead Sea.

On the sixth day you will explore the extensive and incredibly well-preserved remains of Jerash, a city founded by Alexander the Great. In the afternoon, you can either explore Amman or head to the Jordan River to the site where Jesus Christ was baptised. Day seven depends on your departure time, but if you have a free morning, head to Amman.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite one, trykiwi.com. Ryanair often offers flights to Amman. Time is very tight for this trip, so choose tickets with arrival to Amman as early in the morning as possible. And also, for the flight back home choose tickets with departure from Amman as late in the afternoon as possible, or ideally in the evening!

Visa – a visa for Jordan is compulsory and the Jordan Pass option is ideal if travelling for 3 nights or more. Buy the Jordan Pass online in advance and print it out. The Jordan Pass includes entry to virtually all the places you visit. For this type of trip, you only need a Jordan Pass with one entry to Petra.

Accommodation – for accommodation in Petra choose the SunSet Hotel; for the camping accommodation in Wadi Rum you can look at the Wadi Rum Nature Tours website; a good hotel in Aqaba is Lacosta Hotel. In Madaba opt either for the simple Black Iris Hotel or the nicer Mosaic City Hotel.

Car RentalAVIS – consider paying for full insurance, not only is the traffic a bit chaotic at times but you will be leaving your car in many different places and other drivers don't worry too much about any scratches etc. You'll drive a great distance, choose a more comfortable car.

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour – make arrangements ahead of time with the campsite where you'll be staying. If you use the campsite we suggest, then arrange your jeep tour right away with your accommodation. Don't forget to agree on the form of payment, usually it's cash in JOD on the spot.

Petra by Night – evening tour of Petra. Entry is not covered by the Jordan Pass. You can either get tickets on the spot or better yet, ask your hotel in Wadi Musa to arrange tickets for you.

Prices at the destination – prices in Jordan are reasonable. Of course, you can encounter big differences – prices are usually significantly higher on the tourist routes than a few streets away from the centre.

Calls and data – check with your provider for current prices. WiFi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free. Don't forget that when you are in Wadi Rum Village it will be your last chance to make a call or send a text – there is no signal at the campsite, and signal is also not great on the Jeep Tour.

When to come here – pretty much anytime. Over the summer it will probably be very hot here, and there will also be a lot of other tourists. So, early spring or late fall is ideal. However, you can go here in winter if you’d like, but there may be snow, even in Wadi Rum – so I’d suggest skipping December and January. My experience in late February was almost 20°C during the day and 3-5°C at night, so ideal for hiking.

TIP – there is even more to experience in Wadi Rum! Through Wadi Rum Nature Tours, you can arrange to sleep in the desert in the open air – after dinner they will drive you into the desert and bring you back in the morning for breakfast. Don't worry the guide will be with you the whole time! Alternatively, you can arrange to travel to or from the campsite on camels – but be prepared that it's not a short journey. Due to tight schedules, a camel ride to the campsite would only be possible on your arrival at Wadi Rum Village. Your suitcases will be taken away by jeep and you will ride on majestic camels.

Process

  • Check the availability of accommodation – especially at the campsite in Wadi Rum

  • Book your plane tickets

  • Book accommodation in all locations – preferably with a possibility of cancellation

  • Arrange your car rental

  • Buy online the Jordan Pass

  • Look up whether there will be the Petra by Night event taking place – and buy the tickets straight away

  • Get your travel insurance

  • Download the maps.me app on your mobile phone and download the relevant offline maps

What will you see on the way?

Tour of Petra

Petra

Petra – be sure to come here early in the morning to avoid the crowds of tourists. It is ideal to be there at 7 a.m., or even a little earlier! Bring good shoes, water, and a small snack. There are small restaurants in the area, and you can buy snacks on site. Before entering, you must take your Jordan Pass to the window in the visitor centre – they will issue you a ticket. It is rather convenient and useful to have a map of the area. The basic route to The Monastery and back is about 12 km. With photos, looking around, sightseeing, and coffee stops, it will take you 5-6 hours at a leisurely walk.

WADI RUM JEEP TOUR

WADI RUM JEEP TOUR

Wadi Rum Nature Tours and Camp – not only do they run a great camp, but their jeep tour is perfect. It’s a full day trip – you leave right after breakfast and return after sunset. Lunch will be prepared for you by your guide in the desert. Wear good shoes, sometimes you need to walk a bit.

Jerash – The Archaeological Site of Jerash

Jerash – The Archaeological Site of Jerash

An absolutely fantastic place – a mixture of Greek and Roman monuments. The vastness of the site will take your breath away. There is really a lot to see here! The preservation of some of the monuments is surprising. We were absolutely blown away here.
