Five days in Jordan
Jordan

Five days in Jordan

  • 5 days
  • singles, couples, w/ kids
  • spring, fall

Five packed days where you'll see the world-famous Petra, visit the amazing Wadi Rum, swim in the Dead Sea and, of course, cover quite a few kilometres. The ideal time to come here is April/May and then September/October. You may do this holiday even in February or November without too much difficulty, just be aware that it gets really cold in the desert at night then! On the other hand, I wouldn't go to Jordan in the summer – the heat will be insane. You will drive quite a lot of kilometres so its good to have some driving experience. Apart from visiting the rock town of Petra, which probably doesn't need further intorduction, you will also spend two nights in the beautiful desert of Wadi Rum. You'll make a stop at the Dead Sea, visit the mythical Mount Nebo, Madaba and explore the capital Amman.

5 / 5

The journey starts with a car rental at the airport and then a long but beautiful drive along the old King's Highway to Wadi Musa, the entrance to Petra. On the second day you will start very early in the morning and go on a tour of Petra for a few hours, then visit Little Petra and drive to Wadi Rum. You will stay in a camp in the middle of a desert.

You will spend the whole of the third day on a jeep tour of Wadi Rum. The beauty of this place will take your breath away. It really is something! For the fourth day, we have prepared several options depending on the time of year you visit Jordan and also on your preferences. You can choose between a visit to Mujib Nature Reserve, relaxing by the Dead Sea or a trip to the mythical Mount Nebo, from where Moses showed the Jews the Promised Land. If your flight doesn't leave too early on the fifth day, you can still visit the capital Amman.

Travel Info

Plane tickets – use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com. For example, Ryanair flies to Amman often. Time is very tight for this trip, so choose tickets with arrival to Amman as early in the morning as possible. On the last day, try to get tickets with departure from Amman as late in the afternoon as possible, ideally in the evening!

Visa – a visa for Jordan is compulsory and the Jordan Pass option is ideal when visiting for 3 nights or more. Buy the Jordan Pass online in advance and print it out. The Jordann Pass includes entry to virtually all the places you visit. For this specific holiday you only need a Jordan Pass with overnight entry to Petra.

Accommodation – Hotel in Petra: SunSet Hotel. For the accommodation in Wadi Rum in a camp you can choose at the Wadi Rum Nature Tours website. Hotel by the Dead Sea: Mujib Chalets - Mujib Biosphere Reserve.

Car Hire – We recommend AVIS. Consider getting full insurance, not only is the traffic a bit chaotic at times but you will be leaving your car in various places along the way and other drivers don't worry too much about any scratches and bumps. You'll drive a lot of miles, so pick a comfortable car.

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour – make arrangements ahead of time with the campsite where you'll be staying. If you use the campsite we suggest, then arrange your jeep tour right there with your accommodation. Don't forget to agree on the form of payment, usually it's cash in JOD on the spot.

Petra By Night – evening tour of Petra. Entry is not covered by the Jordan Pass. More info here. You can either get tickets on the spot or better yet, ask your hotel in Wadi Musa to arrange tickets for you.

Prices at the destination – prices in Jordan are reasonable. Of course, you can encounter big differences; prices are usually significantly higher on the tourist routes than a few streets over.

Calls and data – check with your operator for current prices. Wifi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free. Don't forget that in Wadi Rum Village it will be your last chance to make a call or send a text as there is no signal at the campsite and in the desert in general. Signal isn't great on the Jeep Tour either.

When to go – pretty much anytime. Of course, over the summer months it will probably be very hot here, and there will also be a lot of other tourists. So early spring or late fall are ideal. You can come here in winter if you'd like, but there may be snow, even in Wadi Rum. So we would suggest to skip December and January. My experience in late February was almost 20°C during the day and 3-5°C at night, so ideal for hiking.

TIP – there is even more to experience in Wadi Rum! Through Wadi Rum Nature Tours you can arrange to sleep in the desert in the open air. After dinner they will drive you into the desert and bring you back in the morning for breakfast (don't worry the guide will be with you). Alternatively you can arrange to travel to or from the campsite on camels – but be prepared that it's not a short journey. Due to tight schedule, a camel ride to the campsite would only be possible on your arrival at Wadi Rum Village. Your suitcases will be taken away by jeep and you will travel on the majestic camels.

Process

  • Check availability of accommodation (especially at the campsite in Wadi Rum

What will you see on the way?

Driving the King's Highway

King's Highway

King’s Highway – road number 35 – a great road if you are heading from the airport to Petra or back, just be warned it’s a pretty slow road – lots of curves, poor quality surface and sometimes traffic. But the scenery the road winds through is perfect. So, if you have the time, it’s a much better option than taking the highway!

It is suitable for more experienced drivers!

Exploring Petra

Petra

Petra – be sure to come here early in the morning to avoid the crowds of tourists. It is ideal to be there at 7 a.m., or even a little earlier! Bring good shoes, water, and a small snack. There are small restaurants in the area, and you can buy snacks on site. Before entering, you must take your Jordan Pass to the window in the visitor centre – they will issue you a ticket. It is rather convenient and useful to have a map of the area. The basic route to The Monastery and back is about 12 km. With photos, looking around, sightseeing, and coffee stops, it will take you 5-6 hours at a leisurely walk.

Bathing in the Dead Sea

Dead Sea Jordan

Access to the Dead Sea in Jordan is quite like in Israel, i.e., apart from paid beaches, access is mostly forbidden. However, in Jordan, the beaches are not that expensive, also mostly not that nice. Don’t let that put you off, swimming in the Dead Sea is a lot of fun! If you really want to enjoy it, consider either paying for full-day entries at hotels or combine it with an overnight stay at a hotel. Most of the resorts are to the North of the Dead Sea.
