FAIAL
Portugal – Azores

FAIAL

  • 8 days
  • singles, couples
  • year-round

Discover the beauty of Faial also known as Ilha azul (Blue Island), the fifth largest island of the Azores. You will start your journey on the main island of São Miguel and then move on to the beautiful island of Faial. Nature, sea, relaxation and a bit of walking – all this awaits you here. The last 2 days will be spent back on São Miguel.

5 / 5

You'll spend the first day on the island of São Miguel, where you will most likely arrive from your destination. Use the afternoon and evening to explore the capital city of Ponta Delgada. You will head to Faial Island the very next morning. You'll be able to fit the first hike of the trip in the morning as well. Staying at the Azul Singular resort is an experience in itself, you will love it there. In the afternoon you will visit the famous port town of Horta.

On the third day, you'll get up early in the morning and go on a whale and dolphin watching cruise. It's a great experience. In the afternoon, you will go on the wonderful Caldeira circular trek. On the fourth day, you will spend the morning on the Levada trek, and in the afternoon you will visit the Farol dos Capelinhos lighthouse, where there is a really well done exhibition dedicated mainly to the volcanic activity on Faial Island.

On the fifth day, you have a choice of several programme options: for the active, it's a visit to the nearby island of Pico, tourists can go on one of the other great treks on the island, and those who want to relax can just visit the Museu da Fábrica da Baleia de Porto Pim, a very sensitively designed exhibition in a former whale processing factory.

On the sixth day you will fly back to São Miguel and once you have settled in you can head to the town of Furnas: either for an easy and nice hike, or to visit the beautiful gardens of Parque Terra Nostra with its thermal lake, or to take a dip in the thermal natural baths of Poça da Dona Beija.

On the seventh day, you'll put on your hiking shoes for the morning trek Janola do Inferno and the shorter Serra Devassa – São Miguel PRC05 SMI trek in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon you'll cross over to Termas da Ferraria, where hot volcanic springs flow into the sea and mix with cool seawater. On your last day, before your departure, you'll take a shorter but all the more beautiful trek around the Gorreana tea plantations.

Travel Info

Flight tickets – Use your favourite flight search engine. If you don't have a favourite, try kiwi.com. Flights with the Portuguese carrier TAP Portugal are often a good deal. It is often worth buying tickets with a 1-2 night stay in Lisbon, which is also not bad. For flights between the islands use Sata Azores Airlines.

Accommodation – Be careful to plan your holiday well in advance, for example on Faial there is quite limited accommodation.

Restaurants – If you want to go out for dinner in a nice restaurant it is necessary to have a reservation, especially in high season of course. This is especially true in Ponta Delgada and Horta. In smaller restaurants in small villages you can usually be seated without a reservation.

Driving a car – Nothing complicated, you drive on the right,  regulations are diligently followed. Some roads are narrower and lined with stones. The distances on the island are not very long, so a smaller car will do.

Prices in the destination – Prices in the Azores are not staggeringly high. Accommodation can be more expensive as capacity is limited. On the other hand, prices in restaurants and bistros in small villages are very agreeable.

Calls and data – For EU citizens, everything is the same as at home. Wi-Fi is common in hotels and restaurants and is free.

When to come here – Practically any time, but in winter it won't be as warm and it rains more often and the wind blows. In the summer months, July and August, there are, of course, a lot of people here, but if you book everything early it's not a problem.

Treks –  If the suggested treks don't suit you, it's no problem to choose any other trek. Feel free to use the VisitAzores app or the WalkMe app (which is very nicely done).

ADVENTURES –  For the adventurous there is a beautiful cave on São Miguel called Gruta do Carvão – Monumento Natural, they offer two circuits and the longer one must be breathtaking. Unfortunately the number of people per tour is very limited so you have to book as soon as possible! Email address: grutadocarvao@amigosdosacores.pt

Recommended websites: VisitAzores.com and  we especially recommend the overview of the routes

Process

• Check the availability of accommodation and flights

• Buy everything only after checking the availability

• Arrange your car rental

• Book a tour of the Gruta do Carvão - Monumento Natural (see INFO for the trip)

• Buy online boat tickets for the whale watching cruise

• Make restaurant reservations for dinner at least a week in advance

• Get travel insurance

• Download one of the suggested apps and download offline maps (see INFO for the trip)

What will you see on the way?

TREK – Caldeira

TREK - Caldeira

A beautiful circular route of 7 kilometres with an elevation gain of about 300 metres. The better option seemed to be walking in the counterclockwise direction. If you're lucky with the weather, you're in for some spectacular views. Descending down to Caldeira is not allowed without a guide. Move only along the marked path. The route is circular. There is no opportunity to buy refreshments at the site, have a snack and especially plenty of water. Parking is free. Even smaller children used to moving around a bit can manage the trail.

Farol dos Capelinhos

Farol dos Capelinhos

Right next to the lighthouse, actually underground so as not to disturb the local landscape, you will find the Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão dos Capelinhos, where you can learn in a great exhibition everything about the formation of the Azores archipelago and a lot of information not only about the local volcano Capelinhos. The lighthouse itself is no longer in use today: in 1957/1958 there was a major eruption here and with it the formation of a new part of the mainland. The lighthouse building remains partially buried in ash to this day. It is quite a unique place and a must-see during your stay in Faial.

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

The chapel dates from the 18th century with an impressive staircase, which was built in the 20th century. You can drive up to the top of the staircase, where there is also parking for several cars. The views from here are spectacular. Just make sure you don't end up like we did - when we reached the chapel, a procession came out and carried Our Lady and continued down into town with her, on foot, of course, more and more people joined in and sang. It was very nice, but we had the car at the top of the hill and the road down into town is long and narrow and the procession took a really long time. So we had plenty of time to see everything. The staircase was built between 1967 and 1968 and refers to a similar one you may know from Braga, Portugal. The staircase is decorated with blue tiles and scenes from the life of Jesus.
