This place is mainly about the journey through the wadi from the direction of Al Hamra to Rustaq. You definitely need a 4x4 vehicle for this trip; we recommend an offroad vehicle with a higher chassis. We made the journey in a Kia Sportage, and it was neither comfortable nor completely safe. I would opt for at least a Toyota Fortuner next time. You need to have good driving skills as well. If you don’t have any off-road driving experience, be very careful and consider whether you want to drive here at all. Similarly, ask your rental car company beforehand if you can make the trip in car you have rented. Other than the sometimes-stressful nature of the journey, the drive is breathtaking, the views are absolutely stunning, and the mountain villages are very pretty. The Oman Off-Road publication is great, but there is no point in buying it for this one trip.
