Dursey Island – one of the few inhabited islands in the southwest of Ireland. Well, inhabited – only a handful of people live here. There is only one way to the island and that is by cable car. A rather old cable car. There are several paths across the island, most of which lead to the place where you can watch whales and dolphins from – if you have incredibly powerful binoculars and incredible luck though. But even without whales the island is great and I totally recommend it.
ATTENTION: The cable car is very slow and it's definitely worth being here an hour before it opens. The capacity is very limited and there are plenty of tourists, even though not many of them come here. Bring snacks and drinks you can't buy anything on the island. There tends to be a catering trailer at the cable car – but it may not be open in the morning! The cable car runs from 9:30am.
