Austria

Austria

Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany. It covers an area of about 83,900 km² and has almost 8.9 million people. The capital is Vienna. Austria is a federal parliamentary republic and consists of nine federal states. The head of state is the Federal President. The country is a member of the European Union but is not a member of NATO as it declares itself a neutral country.

More than half of Austria's territory is mountainous. The Eastern Alps are the dominant mountain range, and the highest peak is the Grossglockner. Austria is a popular tourist destination not only for its ski resorts, but also for its lakes. Some of the well-known lakes include Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See and Wolfgangsee. Austria has a mix of oceanic and continental climate, which is why it has very cold winters and hot summers with low rainfall all year round.
