Are there really too many tourists?

Are there really too many tourists? Our experience of a week in July on the Greek island of Rhodes
The answer is unequivocally yes. Travel is becoming more accessible to more people, leading to congestion at popular destinations. We, as a travel website, try to contribute to solving this problem by promoting travel outside the high season or to less traditional places using the services of small entrepreneurs.
An example is our recent week-long stay on the island of Rhodes, where we went with my wife and our young grandchildren—aged 7 and 6. Although it is often reported that Rhodes is overrun with tourists in July, we spent a week there almost alone. We rented a small house with a pool in a village away from the main tourist locations. We took daily hikes in the mountains in the central and southern parts of the island, and with a few exceptions, we were pretty much alone. We always left before 9 a.m. and spent the afternoon at the beach or pool.
Yes, it took a bit of planning, but with the exception of a few really well-known spots, we enjoyed Rhodes with almost no tourists. I'm sure we'll put together an itinerary soon, and like all the others, it will be free to use. Here are a few tips we've already prepared:
- Rhodes Toy Museum: A great place where we spent two hours of fun and returned two days later. We recommend diving into all the games on offer, which are free to try. Plus, you can make your own small toys here. Simply SUPER.
- Fourni Beach: We were here on a weekday afternoon, and there were fewer than 40 people. You can rent sunbeds with umbrellas and get simple snacks with friendly service. Clean, quiet, and a beautiful sea.
- The Holy Monastery of Tharri: A monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael. A beautiful journey, although the landscape is marked by fires from past years. We spent just over an hour here and were alone the whole time.
- Rhodescape Park: A great place for families with children aged 5 to 12. We spent three hours here and tried archery, zip-lining, and a lake ride. The place offers many activities, simple but good snacks, and friendly service. On a weekday, we were there alone, arriving right at the beginning of opening hours.
Summer is in full swing, and we are leaving for Kyrgyzstan in a few days, so the itinerary from Rhodes will take a while. We hope you enjoy our four tips.
Have a great summer!
