CANARY ISLANDS – TENERIFE

  • 6 days
  • couples, w/ older kids
  • year-round

The Canary Islands are a great place for hiking all year round. In the case of Tenerife, however, you should expect a bit more challenging hiking involving considerable elevation changes. Of course, everything can be easily adapted to your needs and wishes. Tenerife is a really beautiful island! In less than a week you will get to know its eastern and southern parts. You will visit wonderful trails, including the legendary Masca trail. You can easily manage without a car here as the bus connections work very well. But it takes some planning. Ppack your comfortable hiking shoes and get going!

Full-day hike or tour of the city of Puerto de la Cruz

You have several options to choose from today: either go on a full-day hiking trip, go to the town of Puerto de la Cruz, or drive to the nearest beach and just relax by the sea.

You won’t need a car today. You will go on a day trek starting at your accommodation: Trek Tenerife. It’s a bit more challenging with an elevation gain of about 900 meters – but then again, you have the whole day for this hike, so there’s no need to hurry. The hike is 14 km long (route here). With some breaks for food, the whole route can easily be done in 8 hours. If you start at 9am, you’ll make it to Terraza La Piñata restaurant in the village of Teno for an early lunch. Just don’t eat too much as there is still another 3.5 to 4 hours of hiking ahead of you.

You have two options how to make the hike easier. Either you can drive a short distance and leave your car in the car park at the Mirador Altos de Baracán viewpoint which will shorten the route by about 2 kilometres, and it will save you 250 altitude metres! The other option is to take a bus from the LAS CANALES bus stop, which you will find at the following coordinates: 28.3402006N, 16.8509006W. Buses number 355 and 365 run from here and take you back to your accommodation: EL CARRIZAL bus stop. However, the buses don’t run very often, so check the schedule in advance!

Plan your journey according to your physical abilities! If you don’t feel like preparing your own dinner, you can drive (route here) to the Tasca Baracan restaurant, a great place to get to know the typical Tenerife cuisine.

Alternatives: An alternative to hiking today is a trip to the beach or to the town of Puerto de la Cruz. Alternatively, take a car trip to the north of the island – we tried this, but it was very crowded on that day. There was practically nowhere to park, the viewpoints were crowded by people. But if you do go north, you might like our tip for a simple restaurant with good home-cooked food: Guachinche Moderno Casa Lola. It’s just a small roadside restaurant, but it was very nice!

Trek Tenerife

A full-day hiking trek of about 14 km with an elevation gain of about 900 m. The route is well marked and due to the elevation suitable for more experienced hikers. The route can be shortened or you can use a bus for the last third of the way. But that would be a pity, because it is a nice route, even if a smaller part of it is on the road.

Tasca Baracan

If you really want to experience the local cuisine, then definitely book a table here. A simple restaurant, but the dishes are authentic, and we all enjoyed them very much. Prices are normal, maybe even lower than average. The service is friendly.
