CANARY ISLANDS – TENERIFE
- 6 days
- couples, w/ older kids
- year-round
The Canary Islands are a great place for hiking all year round. In the case of Tenerife, however, you should expect a bit more challenging hiking involving considerable elevation changes. Of course, everything can be easily adapted to your needs and wishes. Tenerife is a really beautiful island! In less than a week you will get to know its eastern and southern parts. You will visit wonderful trails, including the legendary Masca trail. You can easily manage without a car here as the bus connections work very well. But it takes some planning. Ppack your comfortable hiking shoes and get going!
Finish the morning's easy Barranco del Infierno hike with a delicious lunch. You'll go to the viewpoint at Los Gigantes and take a beautiful walk back to your accommodation in the afternoon.
This morning you will enjoy the Barranco del Infierno trail. There is an admission fee to be paid. Be sure to buy it well in advance (at www.barrancodelinfierno.es). The journey from your accommodation will take about 1 hour, with one or two stops at viewpoints along the way. The route is here. It’s usually difficult finding a parking spot in the town near the trail start, but luckily there are underground garages a short distance away. Then it’s a short walk uphill to the entrance. Even though you’re buying tickets for a specific time, you’ll very likely get an email or text the day before to arrive as early in the morning as possible, given the midday temperatures. I recommend arriving no later than 10am. The walk through the gorge is a 6.5km round trip. A beautiful small waterfall awaits you at the end of the gorge. There is also usually a member of the staff who makes sure that everyone is on their way back by 12pm at the latest. The trail is not difficult, the elevation gain is not great. It is necessary to have enough water with you though. Most of the time you walk in direct sunlight. You have to wear a helmet the whole time you’re here. There are plenty of places where you can sit down and rest. The views are spectacular!
After completing the trail, walk into town for lunch. It’s better to go a little further from the trailhead where there are quite touristy businesses. We went to Restaurant Casa Juan Adeje and it was a good choice. Typical local cuisine, relatively low prices and friendly service. Plus, on the way back to the parking lot, you’ll pass a great little fruit and vegetable shop called Fruteria el Roque, which you should definitely stop by!
Then continue to Los Gigantes. The drive will take you about 30 minutes (the route is here). The cliffs are nice; but it’s quite enough to see them from the viewpoint.
In the afternoon there is a beautiful hike. However, it is necessary to split up. Someone has to make a sacrifice and drive the car to the accommodation. The hike group will be dropped off here. The hiking route is beautiful and the elevation gain in this direction is not extreme: less than 500 meters. You will travel a total of 9 km (the route is here). Just make sure you arrive in daylight, it’s a 4-hour hike at most! Whoever drives the car to the accommodation can meet the hikers halfway; despite the considerable climb at the beginning, it is worth it as the road is really beautiful! I was the one to drive the car to the accommodation and then went to meet the others halfway and I worked up a decent sweat, because on the very first kilometre you will climb 230 vertical meters already (route). If you’re worried about getting it all done in daylight, feel free to skip the Los Gigantes viewpoint, you can do that some other day.
Have dinner at your accommodation.
Alternatives: After lunch, there’s no need to head to the Los Gigantes lookout or take an early evening trek. Instead, you may head to Abama Beach for a great afternoon. The access is a bit more challenging, the parking a bit far, but it’s still worth it as the beach is really very nice.
Beautiful trek through a gorge. The path is not difficult, but it is good to come here in the morning, so that you’re not here during the biggest heat. Be sure to take plenty of water. You must always wear a safety helmet here, which they give you at the entrance. After about 3 km you will reach a nice waterfall at the end of the gorge. Return the same way. The views here are beautiful! There is a car park a short distance from the main entrance, here are the coordinates: 28.1236806N, 16.7254111W. WARNING: you have to book the entry to the gorge well in advance. Book it online.
This is not a tourist restaurant. You’ll meet a lot of locals here. The environment is nice, nothing fancy, but clean. The service was very nice. The food was excellent! Most of the dishes are typical of the local cuisine. The prices are very moderate.
The town of Los Gigantes made famous by the eponymous high cliffs north of the town. The cliffs rise up to 800 metres. The view must be breathtaking, especially from a boat at sea. Just stop at the viewpoint located at the coordinates listed here.
Really nice trip. Nothing difficult, the second half of the hike is even slightly downhill. There are some beautiful views along the way. Bring water and snacks, you can’t buy anything there. The path is well marked. If you decide to split up, the driver of the group may drive the car to the end of the hike and go in the opposite direction to meet you halfway. In that case, beware – there is an extreme climb right at the start of the route (for the driver), but it’s definitely worth the views.
