CANARY ISLANDS – TENERIFE
- 6 days
- couples, w/ older kids
- year-round
The Canary Islands are a great place for hiking all year round. In the case of Tenerife, however, you should expect a bit more challenging hiking involving considerable elevation changes. Of course, everything can be easily adapted to your needs and wishes. Tenerife is a really beautiful island! In less than a week you will get to know its eastern and southern parts. You will visit wonderful trails, including the legendary Masca trail. You can easily manage without a car here as the bus connections work very well. But it takes some planning. Ppack your comfortable hiking shoes and get going!
Upon arrival and car pick-up, you will proceed to your chosen accommodation.
Tenerife Sur Airport is located in the southern part of the island. It is very easy to navigate. You will find there a large number of companies offering car rental. A great choice is CICAR – Canary Islands Car Rental: they have an office right by the baggage claim. The car rental car park is right opposite the airport building. The advantage of renting from CICAR is that full insurance is included in the price of the car. The price is more than favourable. First, you sort everything out in the office and then you just pick up the car from the car park. Booking in advance is necessary.
Accommodation – Tenerife is a tourist paradise, so accommodation options are plentiful. It depends on what you prefer. We were looking for peace, solitude, and relaxation. We chose to rent a smaller house in the mountains, and it was absolutely wonderful! The name of the accommodation is a bit strange: Homelike Nature Carrizales and Masca House. It is a two-storey house with a small backyard. Ideal for 4 people, the top floor has a bedroom and bathroom with a toilet, the bottom floor has the same plus a small living room and a fully equipped kitchen. Parking is on the street below the house – you cannot drive directly to the house; you have to walk about 20 meters up a steep hill. The location was great, with gorgeous views and perfect tranquillity. Maybe a slight disadvantage, especially for those who don’t like to drive, is that you will spend most of your time in the part of the island that lies to the east, so you will always have to take the serpentine roads back to Masca and up to the town of Santiago del Teide. It’s less than 10 km, but it will take you half an hour one way. It’s a lot of curves on a very narrow road, but the views are incredibly beautiful!
On the way from the airport to your accommodation (route here) do some shopping. A very good place to shop is the Supermercado El Valle in Santiago del Teide. It’s along the way, plus there are plenty of cafés and small restaurants where you can grab a snack or dinner.
Alternatives: you’ll also find wonderful accommodation at Sweet Home Masca. You’ll love the view!
A small fairly modern terminal in the south of the island. There are several car rental companies to choose from. Alternatively, the bus service works very well.
Car rental in the Canary Islands. They have a great service. Very reasonable prices, special offers including full insurance. Order easily and clearly through their website. Picking up and returning the car was a matter of minutes.
Very nice accommodation. Especially for those who are looking for peace and quiet. Ideal for 2 couples or for a family with older children. There is no shop nearby so do your shopping on the way from the airport. Restaurants are within a few minutes’ drive. Amenities are great. Parking is located about 150 meters from the accommodation. It is quite an uphill walk from the car to the house, it’s not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. You have to take into account that a lot of the routes to and from this accommodation will go through Masca and there are lots of curves on a narrow road that you will constantly have to deal with. You might even enjoy it a bit if you like driving, though.
